Argyria

An old medical condition called Argyria, seldom found these days, was caused by long-term high doses of silver nitrate, or ground silver particles. Argyria is a condition whereby the skin becomes blue-grey over time. This discolouration, or dark pigmentation of the skin, was caused by heavy particle silver saturation in the blood stream. The continued build-up of silver nitrate, or ground silver particles in solution over many years, created heavy silver metal deposits, which stayed in the blood stream. The blood then took on a blue-grey colour which showed through the skin. Thus with long-term use, the skin became a grey colour.

The reason why the silver stayed in the blood stream, and other parts of the body, is, logically, very simply. The silver particles size were too large, and too heavy, for the body to eliminate satisfactorily. Therefore, substantial silver deposits built up over time. There was no debilitating or other health problem associated with Argyria. The person had normal full health. The only medical condition was a coloured pigmentation of the skin. The blue-grey pigmentation would gradually diminish over time once the ingestion of the heavy silver solution was stopped. The skin would then return to normal colour, after the silver nitrate or heavy silver solution medicine was eliminated. This may take many years.
 
The website (USA) called "Rosemary's Argyria Page"  http://homepages.together.net/~rjstan  claims to be her personal account of how she got her slate grey (or blue-grey) condition. She claims that the condition was caused by colloidal silver treatment for an allergy in her teens, that the grey pigmentation of her skin was caused by colloidal silver.

What is curious is that she underwent a dermatological treatment of dermabrasion of her facial skin. That is, the top layer of her facial skin was removed, abraded with sandpaper, in an endeavour to rub off the grey colour. The intelligence of the dermatologist, and likewise the patient, is in question for such treatment.
 
It took Rosemary over 20 years of taking Silver Salt Salve up her nose during the 50's. Rosemary inaccurately claims it was colloidal silver that caused her skin change. But in fact, it was NOT colloidal silver or even a close derivative of colloidal silver! The claim is a fabrication! The website was put up, funded or sponsored by some individual or organisation waging war against the expanding and demanding public need of Alternative Medicine. In particular, to frighten earnest enquirers of colloidal silver, seeking safe antibiotic substitutes.

The following are possible answers to the claim of 'Rosemary' : 
1. That the claim is totally false, having been concocted by persons with a negative agenda to damage the Alternative Health movement in the U.S.A. and world-wide. The persons may be connected to or paid by the pharmaceutical industry, in an endeavour to put out fabricated and misinformation, with the intention to create hysteria, to scare people who have been using, or new or potential users of,  colloidal silver. Such practices are created by the thoroughly unscrupulous and self appointed quackwatchers in America, Australia and elsewhere.

2. That the form of  colloidal silver Rosemary took, was either silver chloride, silver nitrate or a dense* colloidal silver, taken daily over several years, thus forming substantial silver deposits throughout her body.  From a scientific position, if this were the case, the liquid would be classified as dense, or saturated silver or silver chloride solution. Another possibility is that Rosemary may have been given ground silver, or silver dust in solution, which is not a silver colloid when mixed in water. However, its antibiotic and anti-infection qualities would be without question!
* (Deep red or grey-black colour, whereby the particle size was dense and really too large and heavy to be eliminated from the body).

3. That Rosemary's condition could be Vitiligo. A fairly common non-contagious skin condition for which the cause is unknown. It can occur at any age, but usually starts in young adults. For most people, it starts with a loss of pigment in patches that are usually symmetric (meaning in the same areas on the two halves of the body). Areas that are often affected are the corners of the mouth and eyes, hands, elbows, knees and genitals. Patches can come and go, but in some people the patches can spread, involving almost the entire body. This is known as vitiligo universalis. Hair follicles can also be affected, resulting in patches of white hair. Though the cause is unknown, it is clear that the body's immune cells attack the pigment producing cells of the skin (called melanocytes). Since the patches without pigment no longer have melanocytes, they are very susceptible to sunburn and skin cancer. (It is believed by many that the pop star Michael Jackson suffered from vitiligo).

4. That the photograph of Rosemary put out on the website, claiming to be Argyria, is a fabrication and or heavily retouched. The alteration (retouching) of images, using Photoshop or similar software, is a simple process and can be done with little experience. As an after note, two of the photos on Rosemary's website strongly appear to be shiny heavy greasy makeup.
